对16种植物的174个DMP基因的系统发育进行分析，这可分为5个亚家族(I-V)；4个棉种包括58个DMP基因，大部分棉花DMP主要在生殖器官(萼片、花瓣、雌蕊和花药)和次生细胞壁期纤维中表达；基因互作网络表明：DMP作为一种内膜系统参与植物衰老过程和花的生殖发育。本研究对棉花DMP基因家族进行了系统分析，探究了候选基因的潜在功能。
系统鉴定和分析了棉花SUN家族蛋白，通过病毒诱导的敲除和CRISPR/cas9介导的GbSUN5敲除，发现尽管花粉活力仍然正常，但是其败育率较高。本研究结果表明：SUN3和SUN5在生物学功能上存在差异，在生殖发育中发挥重要作用。
